Two young children were killed and two firefighters were injured after a fire ripped through a Trenton home early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to Hewitt Street at about 4 a.m. after multiple 911 callers reported a house fire.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire extending from the first floor through the upper levels of the home, according to Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Rice.

Firefighters began searching the home while battling the flames.

During the search, crews found a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy inside the house.

Both children were removed from the home and taken to the hospital, where they later died from their injuries, officials said.

An adult who was inside the home was able to escape on their own and sought medical treatment.

Two firefighters were also injured while battling the blaze. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, while another suffered non-life-threatening burns to the back of the legs and was taken to a hospital. Both are expected to recover.

The fire also damaged an attached neighboring home, leaving it uninhabitable.

The American Red Cross is on the scene assisting at least four families affected by the fire. Officials have not said how many total people lived in the home or the adjacent home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Trenton fire investigators, police, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey State Fire Marshal's Office.
