The Connecticut Psychiatric Security Review Board granted the conditional release of the "Bridgeport cannibal killer."
Police say 35-year-old Tyree Smith killed Angel Gonzalez on Brooks Street on the East Side of Bridgeport in 2011.
They say he killed the man with an ax and then ate one of his eyeballs and part of his brain.
Smith was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2013.
The Connecticut Psychiatric Security Review Board says Smith had demonstrated long-term stability, remained engaged in all recommended treatments and consistently followed his care plan.
Smith’s release will be conditional. He will remain under structured supervision and will continue to receive mental health treatment, according to the PSRB.
