Residents at NYCHA’s O’Dwyer Gardens say they’re concerned about the condition of their building’s lobby ceiling, which they describe as cracked, peeling, water-stained, and sagging.
The damage is impossible to miss when entering the building. Residents say what began as a small hole has slowly spread over time, growing wider as moisture continues to build up inside the lobby. With snow in the forecast, some worry melting snow could make conditions even worse.
Several residents believe temporary repairs have failed to address the root of the problem, allowing the damage to worsen.
For 76-year-old resident Maimuna, the concern feels especially personal. She lives on the second floor, directly above the damaged lobby ceiling, and says she worries every day about what could happen if the ceiling gives way.
NYCHA says staff have identified a steam leak affecting the lobby ceiling at one building in O’Dwyer Gardens and that plumbers are currently being scheduled to make the necessary repairs.
