Tracy Vallerand, 52, says she is the biological mother of a 32-year-old man whose heartbreaking account of being held captive for 20 years has gripped the nation since Waterbury police first reported it on Feb. 17.
"My son had to go through years and years and years of torment, abuse, torture and neglect - when he should have been cared for," Vallerand told News 12 Tuesday.
Vallerand called Kregg and Kimberly Sullivan "monsters" for what police say was their role in holding her son against his will in their Waterbury home.
"Everybody is wondering, you know - where's the family, why didn't the family do anything? The family has been looking for him for years," Vallerand said.
Vallerand says she gave up custody of her son when he was 6 months old because she didn't feel she could "provide him with the love and care he deserved."
She says she later tried to reconnect with her son, but was "deliberately kept away" by her son's father.
"I did not starve him, I did not lock him, I though he was going to be safe with his father," Vallerand said.
Vallerand says she will be in court when Kimberly Sullivan -- who has been released on $300,000 bond - appears before a judge on Wednesday.
"I want to look her in the eye...I want her to face justice," Vallerand said.
