Connecticut officials are pushing back after the Trump administration labeled the state a "sanctuary jurisdiction."

Attorney General William Tong said there is nothing in state law that designates Connecticut as a sanctuary state.

The Department of Homeland Security accused the state of obstructing federal immigration enforcement and singled out six communities, including New Haven and Hartford.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said the administration is demanding that cities assist in ICE raids or lose federal funding. He called that "extortion."

Gov. Ned Lamont said the designation does not reflect the state's laws or practices. He said Connecticut upholds the Constitution, respects the rule of law and prioritizes community safety.
