A veteran Democratic lawmaker is facing a criminal charge just days before the election after admitting to stealing her opponent's campaign lawn signs.
Incumbent State Representative Anne Hughes of Connecticut's 135th House District was issued a misdemeanor summons for sixth-degree larceny in Easton.
News 12 first reported on the arrest Saturday evening.
The controversy unfolded after her Republican challenger, Darrell Harris, had a staffer hide an AirTag inside one of the signs following a string of disappearances.
The tracking device ultimately pinged on Hughes' property, leading the campaign to alert local police.
Hughes issued the following statement:
"I am deeply committed to serving my constituents during these fraught times. I defend the freedom of speech, even my opponent’s use of my speech and my name on his campaign’s lawn signs, and I take accountability for my actions Friday removing signs that were illegally placed in public right of way and dumped on the roadside. No one is above the law, even lawmakers, and in our little corner of democracy, our system is working to demonstrate what accountability can look like. Let’s hope the rest of the country follows suit! I continue to fight for a much better future together in CT."
