Family members of Edwin Jovanny Lopez Cornejo will be part of a community gathering Tuesday at the Reformed Church of Highland Park.
Family members say - they didn't hear about his death from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, nor the private contractor of the facility.
Instead, they were notified by the hospital when it was time to identify his remains on Saturday.
His mother tells News 12 that he was dealing with health issues related to high blood pressure and diabetes.
A spokesperson from Homeland Security says Cornejo received proper medical care. Adding, in part, “ICE is committed to ensuring that all those in custody reside in safe, secure and humane environments.”
