An Oceanside community came together to clean up a local park named after a man who died of a 9/11 related illness.

Lou Alvarez was an Oceanside resident and retired NYPD detective. He spent months working at the World Trade Center site following the Sept. 11 attacks. Alvarez later dedicated his life to fighting for healthcare and benefits for those affected by toxic exposure.

"It means a lot to have the community come together and show us that they care and they want to keep Oceanside beautiful and keep his legacy alive," said Lanie Alvarez, Lou's wife.

Lou passed away in 2019 from cancer. Community members say the cleanup serves as a tribute to his legacy of service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to others.
