The New Jersey Department of Health says there have been 40 cold-weather-related deaths in the state so far this year. The time period ranges from Jan. 24 to March 3.

The deaths range in age from 25 to 90. The department says that the circumstances surrounding the deaths vary, with some being people found outside in the elements, while others were related to slip-and-fall injuries or deaths involving substance use.

Officials say many of the deaths occurred in northern counties in New Jersey.

Health officials want New Jersey residents to know that there are safe places to go to escape the cold. Shelters can be found either by calling 211 or visiting the New Jersey Cold Blue website.

Officials are also warning those who may go out to shovel snow to dress for the weather, stay hydrated and take regular breaks.
