Renderings of the Mott Haven detention center were released by the city's Department of Design and Construction, or DDC.
In an effort to close Rikers Island by 2027, the city launched a project that would build smaller jails in four boroughs to transfer inmates to.
In the Bronx, a detention center is being built in Mott Haven on East 141st Street.
The DDC said the jail is set to house more than 1,000 inmates.
The city calls the jails "safe and humane."
The city says the project aims to build smaller, safer jails by incarcerating less people. The population of incarcerated individuals at Rikers Island will be divided amongst the four borough-specific jails upon its closure.
Not only will the city invest in the jail, but it is allocating funding for 40,000 square feet of neighborhood space to ensure the jail is a civic asset.
The interior of the jail is designed to be safe and secure for all visitors and those incarcerated there.
The jail is being constructed directly across the street from several homes. Residents tell News 12 they aren't happy about their soon-to-be new neighbors.
"The whole entire neighborhood was not too thrilled," said one resident.
"Why would you build a jail over here? It makes no sense," said another resident. "Most definitely they shouldn't build a jail where the kids at. You know, there are schools over here.... kids run through here every day. Why would you build a prison? Why you couldn't build it somewhere else?"
Neighbors voiced their concerns to News 12 about the visitors the jail would attract and the volume of foot traffic - with both the new jail and infrastructure.
The city says the jail project shows support for the city's commitment to justice reform.
The construction is set to be completed by 2027.
