The city says Tuesday’s severe weather could bring dangerous rip currents along beaches.

Officials asked people to stay out of the water if lifeguards are not on duty and if they see red flags posted.

Experts said life-threatening rip currents are likely for everyone entering the surf zone until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away into deeper water.

“With these kinds of storm conditions, winds, we can have major rip current issues,” said Christina Farrell, commissioner of NYC Emergency Management. “I know that there were some saves, thankfully, over the weekend; but we don’t want any tragedies. So, once the lifeguards go home, it’s really time to get out of the water.”

Experts said if you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Instead, relax and float, or if possible, swim parallel to the shoreline.
