Torrington officials have declared a local state of emergency following severe storms that swept through the area Saturday.

Mayor Molly Spino and Acting Mayor Anne Ruwet issued the declaration to help the city respond to ongoing storm-related impacts. Crews are addressing blocked roads, power outages and downed trees across the city.

The state of emergency will remain in effect until it is formally terminated in writing by the mayor or acting mayor, or as otherwise provided by law.

City officials are also urging residents to prepare for additional heavy rainfall expected over the next several days. A flood watch has been issued for the area through Tuesday.

According to preliminary assessments from the National Weather Service, the damage from Saturday’s storm appears to have resulted from microbursts or straight-line winds rather than a tornado.

Officials continue to monitor conditions and are urging residents to stay alert for weather updates and possible flooding concerns.
