A Central Islip woman is facing multiple charges after the Suffolk SPCA says she put shattered glass and mothballs in common areas of her apartment complex in an apparent attempt to keep animals away.

Officials say the areas were accessible to residents, including children.

The incident happened in August, and investigators say the materials created a substantial risk of injury to those living in the complex.

61-year-old Joyce Hamlett is charged with animal cruelty, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal nuisance, resisting arrest and other offenses.
