The CDC is warning people about a growing number of cyclosporiasis cases across the country, including the tri-state area.

The illness is caused by a parasite that can spread through contaminated food or water. Symptoms typically do not appear until about a week after exposure, which can make it difficult to detect right away.

People infected with cyclosporiasis may experience severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating and nausea. Without treatment, symptoms can last for a month or even longer.

As of June 16, the CDC reported 145 cases nationwide. Health officials are encouraging people to practice safe food handling and be aware of symptoms.
