A Kensington mother says her kids are still shaken up after someone threw a tree branch through their apartment window while they were eating dinner, sending glass flying and injuring her 6-year-old son.
Surveillance video shared exclusively with News 12 appears to show a group of teens hanging out on Argyle Road when one of them suddenly picks up a large tree branch and throws it through the first-floor window.
“I got scared,” Helen Lopez said. “I guess my mind went everywhere. I wasn’t sure if it was gunshots. I wasn’t sure if it was a brick.”
Lopez said she was having dinner with her family when the branch came crashing through the window.
“The last thing we were expecting was to have what was like a huge explosion sound, I guess you could say,” she said.
She said her 6-year-old son was struck by flying glass.
“He was bleeding from his cheekbone, his hands, from his feet,” Lopez said. “Thankfully, no stitches were needed.”
The apartment window is now boarded up. Lopez said there is still glass on the windowsill and that the damage to the window and air conditioner totals more than $1,000.
“Obviously, it’s no longer able to use it because imagine turning that on, all the glass being shattered everywhere,” she said.
In the surveillance video, the same teen appears to first pick up what looks like a brick before putting it down and using a branch instead.
“Just a little stick caused so much damage,” Lopez said. “Imagine the brick?”
Police said they are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.
“Putting people’s lives in danger, it’s not fun,” Lopez said. “If anybody recognizes these kids, not only they can help me, but detectives, catch these kids. Make them be held for accountability. Make sure families in Brooklyn feel safe in their homes.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact the NYPD’s 70th Precinct.
