Cases of HMPV rising in New Jersey, health officials say
Cases of human metapneumovirus, also known as HMPV, are rising in New Jersey. Doctors say the respiratory virus is most common during the colder months and often causes symptoms similar to a common cold. Dr. Steven Goldberg, chief medical officer of the overnight diagnostics company HealthTrackRx, says HMPV typically accounts for about 3%-6% of respiratory infections. But several states, including New Jersey, have recently seen an increase in cases. Symptoms can include cough, congestion, fever and fatigue. In most healthy individuals, the illness usually lasts a few days, but it can last longer in some cases. Health officials say the virus spreads through coughing, sneezing or close contact with someone who is infected. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for HMPV. A PCR test can be used to identify the virus. Goldberg says the best way to prevent infection is by washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick.
