Cardinal Joseph Tobin is recovering following successful surgery to remove a kidney mass last week.
The Archdiocese of Newark announced that the procedure, performed Oct. 29, went as planned with no complications. Tobin returned home on Oct. 30 and is resting while he recovers.
Before the procedure, the archdiocese said testing showed that the mass appeared to be confined to the kidney, and doctors were optimistic about the cardinal’s outlook.
As the cardinal continues to recuperate, the archdiocese said he will refrain from public appearances for several weeks.
"Cardinal Tobin is grateful to his medical team for their skilled, compassionate care and to the faithful for their many prayers and expressions of support," the Archdiocese of Newark said in a statement. "Please continue to keep him in your prayers."
The 74-year-old religious leader was born in Detroit, Michigan, and is the eldest of 13 children.
In 2016, Tobin was appointed to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis and was later named the sixth archbishop of Newark. He was installed on Jan. 6, 2017.
Following the death of Pope Francis, Tobin was one of the eligible cardinal electors who gathered in the Sistine Chapel in May 2025 for the conclave that led to the selection of Pope Leo XIV.
