A California resident has been arrested for scheming a Trumbull woman out of thousands of dollars police say.

Officers say 23-year-old Tushar Sharma, of Arcadia, California, has a prior arrest from New York State Police stemming from a similar incident.

They say it began in March when the victim received a Microsoft Windows pop-up message with a phone number that connected her to Sharma. He claimed to be a Federal Trade Commission agent.

He told the victim her assets and family were in danger and she needed to send him money for safekeeping.

Police say the victim gave Sharma $900,000 in gold coins during two scheduled parking lot meetups.

The victim reported the incident to police and agreed to another arranged meeting by investigators.

Police say Sharma was expecting another transfer of $300,000 in gold coins.

On May 14, as Sharma approached the victim’s car he was arrested by Trumbull police and the Bridgeport Police Task Force.

Investigators suspect there are more victims in the area and encourage them to come forward.

Sharma is set to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court.
