The Office of Emergency management announced a Code Purple alert for the city Tuesday in response to blustering winds, below freezing overnight temperatures and arctic winds, with 50 mph gusts set to roll in later this week.
Those conditions were enough to have commuters bundling up to brave the winds Tuesday afternoon.
Some people who work outdoors said they know to wear double layers, masks and even gloves to stay warm.
"I'm doubling up on my [balaclava], your face might be cold but me I'm warm," said Crown Heights construction worker Dwayne.
On Tuesday night, Gov. Kathy Hochul warned New Yorkers to take conditions seriously, including warnings about potential power outages those high winds may bring.
The governor urged New Yorkers to keep their phones charged and have a plan in place if they lose power.
