Bullets flying through a Keansburg neighborhood left one man dead and narrowly missed a sleeping woman Monday night.
According to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago, Keansburg police responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 40 block of Carr Avenue at approximately 8:56 p.m.
Officers found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities have not released his identity.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Keansburg Police Department are investigating the homicide.
As investigators worked the scene, residents learned just how close the gunfire came to causing another tragedy.
One bullet tore through a nearby apartment, narrowly missing a woman who was sleeping on her couch.
The resident told News 12 the round missed her head by about a foot before smashing through a mirror, ripping through a bathroom wall and ending up in a shower.
Bullet fragments then lodged in another wall.
The woman was not injured but remains shaken by the ordeal.
Neighbor Rebecca Trumble said she had just arrived home from work when the shooting unfolded.
“We heard three shots go off and that's when we looked outside and saw a body laying on the ground,” Trumble said. “I'm grateful she's still alive. She is such a sweetheart. That could have been us.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office or Keansburg police.
