Brooklyn institutions and labor unions are calling on the New York City Department of Transportation to paint centralized bus lanes to improve service for commuters.
Commuters like Daimeon Grannun are frustrated.
"Honestly, the bus is horrible in this area because of the traffic," said Grannun.
Local organizations say painting centralized bus lines would help buses avoid traffic from cars.
Jolyse Race, senior organizer at Rider's Alliance, says they want to see centralized bus lines from Empire Avenue to Livingston Avenue.
“The regular bus lanes, the curbside bus lanes that are right outside of the curb, oftentimes they're just not respected. And cars park and double parking them and they're really not enforced very well. Which doesn’t always totally speed up the bus. A car is going to be way less likely to sort of disrespect the bus lane when it's in the center of the road," said Race.
People like Christine Palmer say there's nothing worse than delayed public transit.
“When you have to go, you just want to go. You don’t want to be sitting and waiting on the bus forever. You just want to go," said Palmer.
But she says she's not sure how it will impact all commuters.
“It’s gonna be even more crowded for the private car, but it’s gonna work out for people who take the bus a lot," said Palmer.
Race tells News 12 a survey that Rider's Alliance conducted with the Pratt Institute shows that people reported job loss, punishment or decrease in pay because of delayed bus service on Flatbush Avenue.
“It's a really big deal for working class riders to see improvement, tangible improvements that will really impact their lives," said Race.
The New York City Department of Transportation released the following statement:
“We appreciate the support for faster and more reliable buses on Flatbush Avenue. We have been refining our design proposal and look forward to sharing more soon with the local elected officials, community boards, and other stakeholders.”
