Well, we're continuing our coverage of Bronx Week. We're highlighting the best of the Bronx, what it has to offer, and today we're at the iconic Wave Hill. News 12's Marissa Santorelli is there in Riverdale with a look at what you can expect on your next visit. Hi Marissa. Hey, good morning, Christy. I mean, Bronnick is in full swing and all week long we're really highlighting some of the borough's hotspots and we really can't do that without highlighting right here in Wave Hill. So I got to tell you this is 4000 species of greenery across the grounds here in Riverdale, and I'm told right here you can see actually some of the best views from the Bronx from right here in Wave Hill, the viewing center we are here right now. So I'm joined by Kathleen Gordon. Nice to see you. She's the marketing director of Wave Hill. I got to ask you, this is a beautiful, beautiful ground, so talk to me a little bit about the history and what comes behind it. Oh, so Wave Hill is actually, it's a historic two old estates of the property here that we're joined by one of the families back in the early 1900s, but it was gifted to the city of New York in the 1960s, and we're actually celebrating our 60th anniversary this year as a public garden and cultural center. Amazing. Now I'm told, you told me before, this is actually like a museum without walls, right? Yes, OK, so break down. So you'll, you'll find as you walk the grounds here, you kind of come across this set up that you're just sort of discovered these magical, beautiful gardens, different areas that have different effect on you personally. When you walk through the walls here, the rest of the world kind of just disappears. Um, it's timeless in many ways, but it's actually different every single time you come in, both from the way that nature changes daily to how our gardeners artistically curate what happens here. And we have a contemporary art gallery which is constantly putting on new pieces each season. So this is not just a. One time visit. This is a multi-visit kind of deal. Yes, every day you feel like it's completely different and every season has something in bloom for you to see. Amazing. I got to ask you one final question quick here. What is your favorite spot in the gardens? My favorite is probably the wild garden, which is the highest point here, which is very much like a natural landscape. It has a fabulous gazebo at the top that you can overlook and see everything that's beautiful. All right, we're going to check that out later. Thank you so much for joining us. Now between the greenery, the rich history, and just the breathtaking views here, I mean we have to stop at Wave Hill for Bronx and I'm now joined with director of programming. Thank you so much for joining us. Hi, thanks for having us. Thanks for joining us today. Yeah, I'm so happy to be here again, rain or shine. These grounds are gorgeous. Now I do want to talk a little bit about the history here. This year is Especially special, right, right. We're celebrating our 60th anniversary just in a couple of weeks between June 5th and June 8th, and we're extremely excited to welcome folks up for a series of programs and opportunities to just rest and play right here on our grounds for a few days. I think this is an awesome space to come and decompress and really take in the beautiful views that you wouldn't think is right here in the Bronx, right, right, yeah. It's an extremely distinctive and unique space and folks can join us and picnic. They'll be able to participate in the release of our new coloring book, as well as join us for things like our pollinator ramble right here on the grounds. It's going to be a really beautiful weekend. I love it. Some fun stuff for people of all ages. I want to talk programming. What stuff do you guys have in store? Yeah, so besides our celebration of events. New and old for the 60th weekend. We are also bringing back our evening nature series that will invite folks of older ages to come and join us for events that inspire their curiosity. So for adults and folks that are really excited about learning something new about salamanders, bats, or stars, we'll have a series of different events on Fridays in July and August that folks will also be able to. Join us for and if you're eager to join us any sooner, we do have Wings Over Wave Hill this weekend where we'll have live demonstrations with large birds. I love that. OK, lots of fun in store, lots of fun for people of all ages. Thank you so much for joining us this morning, enlightening us here onto your beautiful grounds before they open. Chris, you're absolutely right, and we're here in the Wave Hill flower garden, so we need a little bit of rain to let these flowers and plants thrive. Good morning, Chris. Yeah, I think this is actually my favorite spot of the day. Every spot we've gone to so far has just gotten more and more beautiful, and I can't wait to share this with you all. Joining me now, we have Jess Bry. She is the horticulture interpreter here at Wave Hill. Thanks for joining us. Thanks. Good morning. Good morning. All right, we're going to talk about this garden here. Tell me a little bit about where we are right now. So we're in the flower garden. And this is a garden that celebrates the English cottage garden, but with an American twist on the plant palette. Very nice. Tell me a little bit about some of the colors that we're seeing here right now. Yeah, so we're at the east end of the flower garden, which is a small garden, and we have red foliage. We have beautiful irises and peonies that are popping in all sorts of colors. Yeah, absolutely. I think right now this month we can actually see some of those flowers pop. Up in full bloom. Tell me a little bit about that. Yeah, we have nearly 50 irises in this garden alone, and we also have peonies. I see a lilac that's still hanging on. There's a lot to see. It's super colorful, super vibrant, even though we have this kind of like dewy wet rainy weather that we don't love. I mean, you could still smell the flowers. That's how strong it is. Yeah, so I got to ask you, so we have flowers in bloom now. I think everyone thinks spring is the time to come and visit. What's actually the best time you think to come and see these flowers? I really love the end of May into June. However, definitely come back in the autumn. People think that flowers are kind of done then, but we have a lot of plants native to the Americas. And so September, October is also really amazing, amazing. So not just one time to come and visit and check out Wave Hill. You can come all year round. So it's not just Bronx, Bronx Week every week. Well this morning we're continuing our coverage of Bronx week highlighting must-see spots in the borough and today we're at the iconic Wave Hill. News 12's Marissa Santaelli there in Riverdale with the history that you could learn on your visit, Marissa. Yeah, I got to tell you we're seeing some beautiful sights here at Wave Hill really soaking it up, but one thing we're learning along the way is a little bit of history. I'm joined now by the director of arts and chief curator Gabriel de Guzman. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you. It's going to be an exciting morning. It's been an exciting morning here at Wave Hill. Now I'm told right here next to us we have one of the oldest trees in New York City. Now tell me, how is this reflecting in the art gallery that's right here behind us. So we're standing in front of Glendore Gallery where we show contemporary art exhibitions where artists are looking at our relationship to the natural world. So coming up for the 60th anniversary at Wave Hill, we'll be presenting an exhibition that is looking at trees and all their splendor, and the artists are going to be looking at the symbiotic relationships that we share with trees and the trees share with. Many other living organisms. So we have so many plants here on the grounds, so many old trees on the ground, not tying into art. There's a little bit of something for everyone, but I'm hearing that this in here is not the beginning. It's just the beginning. Excuse me. Yeah, it is, and the, the exhibition in here is going to be in the gallery um as well as out on the grounds. We'll have uh an amazing uh. Outdoor exhibition by Sarah Jimenez, um, that's gonna include sculptural work, very bright colors and really beautiful um and then in the summer, uh, we'll be having our outdoor summer uh our outdoor summer live music series where we'll be showing a diverse array of bands, um, music from Latin, Latin music to hip hop. Um, and everything in between, it's going to be very lively and just really a lot of fun and very celebratory of our anniversary. Wednesday nights, sunset Wednesdays. Yes, Wednesday nights in July and August, yeah, right, so if you're in the area, if you want to come check this out, it's not just here in Bronx Week, it's every week all year round.
