Against a backdrop of state oversight and a $30 million budget deficit, Bridgeport's interim School Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery spoke with News 12 Wednesday about the details in his six-month action plan for "fixing the broken district."

"The most important part of the plan is transparency - that's what parents want and we're seeking their engagement," Avery said.

In addition to promoting "absolute transparency," the goals of the five-point plan include measures for improving funding, enhancing support for teachers, supporting special education programs and boosting academic achievement.

Highlights on the six-month roadmap include plans for a range of new features including a welcome center that will serve as "a one-stop shop for parents & families, offering information, resources & student registration".

Additionally, officials say the plan will feature a new email address - communications@bridgeportedu.net - to promote better communication with the district, along with a new district-wide system for monitoring and reporting student performance and growth.

Mayor Joe Ganim is encouraging parents to attend a public forum at Black Rock Library on Feb. 19.

"Please come and learn more about this comprehensive plan for improving our public schools," Ganim said.
