Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal is calling for answers from the Trump administration and Taylor Farms, the company whose lettuce is linked to the cyclospora outbreak.
Blumenthal says Taylor Farms donated $1 million to a Political Action Committee tied to President Trump.
Blumenthal also claims the company called the White House to delay the recall and spent nearly $1 million lobbying against food safety regulations.
He says Taylor Farms was successful in stopping the reporting requirement for cyclospora, which endangered public health
"Taylor Farms has a lot of explanation to provide about how the lettuce was contaminated, where it occurred, how it spread. But the FDA ought to be on it aggressively along with the CDC,” says Blumenthal.
Blumenthal says there have been at least 70 cases of cyclosporiasis.
Michigan officials reported that two people died of the parasite, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified over 18,000 cases nationwide.
