Blowing leaves into the street could cost you $2K under Fair Lawn’s fall recycling rules
As autumn leaf cleanup gets into full swing across Bergen County, Fair Lawn officials are reminding homeowners and landscapers that dumping or blowing leaves into the street is prohibited — and could result in hefty fines.
According to a notice from the Fair Lawn Recycling Division, placing leaves or any yard waste in borough streets is illegal and subjects violators to fines of up to $2,000.
To help residents manage fallen leaves legally, borough officials outlined three disposal options for homeowners. Residents can place leaves in paper lawn bags or rigid containers under 40 gallons for scheduled yard waste collection, bring leaves directly to the Fair Lawn Recycling Center at 20-05 Saddle River Road or hire a private landscaper to remove the waste.
The recycling center operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Landscapers dropping off leaves at the Fair Lawn Compost Center during the fall season must have a borough permit. Seasonal permits cost $100 per truck and can be purchased at the Department of Public Works office inside Borough Hall.
