Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman was sworn in Monday night at the Cradle of Aviation, beginning a new term while also running for governor of New York.
Blakeman told News 12 he believes he can balance running Nassau County while campaigning statewide.
“I’m a worker. I work 24/7,” Blakeman said. “So even if I’m not physically present in the county, I always have my cellphone on. You can text me, call me, email me and I am on top of everything.”
But Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, Democratic minority leader of the Nassau County Legislature, questioned whether that balance will be enough, pointing to ongoing county needs.
“The county has a lot of projects that really do need attention, infrastructure and a number of other things,” DeRiggi-Whitton said. “I’m sure he’ll manage. I’m sure he’ll figure out some way to get through, but is that really what the county residents deserve? I don’t think so.”
Residents also shared mixed reactions about Blakeman holding onto his current position while pursuing higher office. Some expressed concern, while others said they are hopeful he can accomplish both.
“I wish him luck, he’s going to need it in New York state,” said Bill Miller, of East Meadow. “Because he has to become better known around the state, but hopefully he’ll make it.”
Blakeman says his priority remains leading Nassau County while making a case to voters statewide. As his new term begins, attention will be on whether he can deliver on both fronts.
