Bergenfield man arrested for fatal hit-and-run of elderly pedestrian in Hackensack
A Bergenfield man has been arrested and charged in connection with a late-night hit-and-run that killed a 74-year-old man last week.
Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of Terrence J. Hedden, 38, following a joint investigation with the Hackensack Police Department.
The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Essex Street and Summit Avenue in Hackensack. Officers responded to reports of a pedestrian struck and found the 74-year-old man with severe injuries; the vehicle had already fled the scene.
The victim was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.
Investigators say Hedden was driving a 2021 Honda Pilot west on Essex Street when he struck the victim, who was attempting to cross Summit Avenue. Prosecutors say Hedden failed to stop or render assistance.
Detectives and Fatal Accident Task Force investigators located the vehicle and identified Hedden as the driver later that same day.
Hedden was taken into custody and charged with second-degree knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and third-degree endangering an injured victim, along with other motor vehicle offenses. He was taken to Bergen County Jail and is awaiting his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
