The NYPD says it is searching for two suspects accused of attempting to trick two Bergen Beach brothers - and attack one of them - after a minor car crash.
The NYPD says it happened around 12:40 on Friday on Avenue U and East 66th Street in Bergen Beach.
News 12 spoke with Zeeshan Aamar and Usman Rafique, the brothers making the claims.
The brothers say two people wearing a car repair company logo handed them a business card after the minor car crash.
“They were telling us we should come with them, and we should fix our cars with them. I said, 'Brother, just give us some space. We are just exchanging information. We don't need your help. We are good,'" said Rafique.
The brothers then said one of them then came back, claiming to be with the police.
“He said work he works for the NYPD. He showed me his NYPD badge. It was a black pouch and there was a badge inside the pouch written by, like, NYPD," said Aamar.
Aamar said after declining help again, they punched the car window and mirror.
The brothers say they got out of the car to get video of the two people, as well as their license plate. They say that's when it became violent.
The brothers shared video of someone taking one of their phones, as provided as dash-cam video of what appears to be someone punching one of them.
Bergen Beach community leader Dimple Willabus says incidents like these are not common for the area.
She held a community meeting over the weekend because she doesn't want to see it happen twice.
"I have lived here for almost 20 years and I've never ever heard of this or experienced this," said Willabus.
Rafique was also shocked by it.
“I was devastated with that act like how come two guys came for help and the same two guys now assaulting us and they're just kicking and punching us. I mean, this is too devastating. I was so devastated,” said Rafique.
News 12 spoke with an employee of the car collision company, who says they hand out apparel with their logo on it at community events.
They say they don't know who the two people are, and that they aren't employees.
