The FDNY says a fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. Monday at Taqwa Grocery and Meat Market on Fulton Street.
Flames quickly spread to the two apartments above the store, causing extensive damage to the building’s roof and structure.
The Red Cross is assisting roughly a dozen people who lived in those apartments. No residents were injured, although one firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, the FDNY said.
Neighbors say the loss is a blow to the community, especially during the final days of Ramadan.
Neighbors told News 12 that some residents who live above the store were already awake preparing food in observance to Ramadan, before sunrise when the fire broke out.
“If it happened when they were sleeping, it could be worse,” he said.
Community members say the store was a go-to spot for groceries and halal meat in the neighborhood.
Fire marshals spent hours at the scene investigating what caused the fire.
