Changes are underway for Bed-Stuy’s iconic Marcus Garvey Armory, otherwise known as “The Castle,” as part of a $10 million state investment aimed at transforming the historic building into a multi-purpose community hub and resource center.

New York State Assembly Member Stefani L. Zinerman, 56th District, says the site holds deep personal meaning for the community.

“Like most people who grew up in and around this time, this was The Castle was our playground,” Zinerman said. “We want this place to be a place where not only local residents, but tourists can come and visit and have a great time.”

The long-term plan includes arts performance space, sports facilities and job training programs. Residents say they’ve been waiting for this vision to take shape since 2022.

“It’s definitely been a long time. So that’d be an excellent, good idea for the kids, for the grown-ups and plus people that living in the shelter,” said resident Andrew Fuller.

The redevelopment will also include space for small businesses and nonprofits, along with an Olympic-sized pool. Leaders say the goal is to turn the armory into a true community anchor.

“When they walk in those doors, we want them to see, you know, the spaces with nonprofits and small businesses. But this arts and culture and sports and recreation. This really is a community-driven effort,” Zinerman said.

Officials say the project is still evolving, with community input continuing to shape what the space will become.

“I don’t ever want anybody to walk down the street past this or drive past them and say, ‘well, what’s going on there?’ Your voice still can count if you are engaging with us in terms of what you’d like to see,” Zinerman said.
