Residents at an apartment unit at 444 Lafayette St. say they are on their 10th consecutive day without power following a
string of HPD violations found inside their unit last.
They say sewage and wastewater began dripping down through the overhead kitchen light inside the unit, starting on Aug. 2, prompting FDNY to shut off the power to prevent a fire.
"I turned it on and it was like 'boom,' like a gunshot," said resident Joshua Rosas, who lives in the unit with his pregnant wife, Skye.
It took eight days before the leak would be resolved, as repair crews from management company Concord Management of NY LLC and crews from Housing and Public Development (HPD) closed the ceiling leak and made repairs to the ceiling of the unit on the afternoon of Aug. 8.
In a statement to News 12, Concord Management said in part that "an electrician will be scheduled for the partial electrical outage impacting the affecting the kitchen and living room impacted by the leak. It added that "Our priority is the health and safety of our tenants."
According to the HPD website, the building currently has 127 open violations, with over 30 stemming from Joshua and Skye's unit since May.
The apartment remains without the power as of Tuesday evening, with HPD confirming to News 12 that subsequent repairs will be handled by Concord Management, despite Concord's statement to News 12 that an electrician would arrive to restore power Tuesday
In a statement to News 12, HPD said the power would be returned to the unit after repairs were made to the damaged light fixture that sparked the leak and that multiple units were entered in search of the cause of the ruptured pipe but did not provide a timeline for those repairs to be made.
Despite the closure of the initial leak, Joshua and Skye say the work needed in the unit is far from over, including a second leak of sewer water seeping up from the floorboards inside the kitchen, leaving the entire apartment reeking of urine.
"All I smell is sewer and urine in my apartment, I'm in the dark," Joshua said. "What is being done about the mold in the unit, the black water in and around the sink and warping the floorboards. We are sitting and waiting," he said.
As a result of the extended power outage, they are left unable to cook in the unit and had to throw out $270 worth of groceries from the fridge that spoiled during the course of the outage.
"I'm not eating enough because we are eating out, and I need to be able to feed me and my baby," Skye said.
They say they are now mopping up the leak coming from the floorboards daily and are considering moving if repairs aren't met.
"I feel like this building should be shut down and that we should just take our things and leave because I don't believe the repairs we are asking for, and reporting to 311 will happen," Joshua said. "No one should have to live like this, with the smell."
