An abandoned sailboat that has been stuck on the beach in Sea Girt since last summer is being removed today.
The 30‑foot Catalina, called The Alestrom,
became stranded last September after its captain left Staten Island bound for Cocoa Beach and was pushed off course by a storm.
The boat ended up partially buried in the sand with a broken rudder. It has since endured multiple storms and winter weather, with wind tearing at its remaining sails.
Officials said the captain pleaded guilty to an ordinance violation and was fined thousands of dollars. He claimed a misinterpretation of the law caused delays in removing the vessel.
Sea Girt later estimated the removal cost at around $15,000. A recent court order gave the borough control of the boat, clearing the way for today’s removal.
