Bayonne Little League fans erupted in celebration Wednesday night as their hometown team pulled off a dramatic walk-off victory over Massachusetts in the Little League World Series.
The win sparked cheers from a packed watch party in Bayonne, where supporters gathered to watch the Metro Region champions compete on Little League baseball's biggest stage.
"We were nail-biting for a little bit," said Bayonne local Elvia Garcia. "We said, 'What happens if they're tied?' But here we are. We made it. Let's go Bayonne."
For weeks, the city has rallied behind the team as it continued advancing through tournament play. Residents tell News 12 the players' determination and success have united the community.
"We're excited to win the game," said one young fan. "It shows how far Little League has accomplished in Bayonne."
Fans said the city's rallying cry, "Bayonne vs. Everybody," has become a symbol of the team's underdog mentality.
"It's the grit, and they're obviously well-coached," said another local supporter.
Following the two-run victory, optimism is growing that Bayonne can make a deep run in Williamsport.
"They keep fighting. Those little kids got a big heart. I love watching them. They inspire everybody. Look what they bring. They bring a community together. It's pretty good for Bayonne," said Bayonne resident Clayton McMurey.
With the win, Bayonne advances in the Little League World Series as the Metro Region champion. The team is scheduled to face the Mid-Atlantic Region champion on Friday.
