A 23-year-old Bay Shore man has pleaded guilty to numerous charges connected to a deadly hit-and-run last year.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office says Alexander Cerda broke the window of a local residence and stole an unlocked Toyota RAV4 from the driveway the morning of March 8, 2025.
He sped down Main Street without headlights and struck 52-year-old
Eric Perez, of Bay Shore, ten minutes later. The impact was so intense that it threw Perez down the road by a considerable distance.
Prosecutors say Cerda left his vehicle and took photos of the damage as good Samaritans tried to help the victim, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Cerda returned to the car and drove off when police arrived. Detectives found the stolen vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex near his residence the following day.
He pleaded guilty on Sept. 30 to manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, grand larceny, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
He is due back in court on Jan. 8 and expected to be sentenced to six to 18 years in prison.
