A Barnegat man who admitted killing his parents in 2023 has been sentenced to 30 years in New Jersey State Prison, authorities said.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced that Michael Mulgrew, 37, was sentenced Friday on two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, Eugene Mulgrew, 71, and Cheryl Mulgrew, 69. The court imposed a 30-year prison term with 30 years of parole ineligibility on each count. The sentences will run concurrently.
Mulgrew pleaded guilty to both charges on March 11. The killings occurred on Nov. 2, 2023, at a home on Lincoln Avenue in Barnegat Township.
According to prosecutors, Barnegat police were called to the home around 11 a.m. to assist medical personnel conducting a mobile outreach visit. Officers observed what appeared to be blood on the front door and found blood throughout the home after entering. In a bedroom, they discovered the bodies of Eugene and Cheryl Mulgrew, both suffering from apparent stab wounds to their upper torsos. A knife was found nearby.
Police also spotted a man walking away from the residence. That individual, later identified as Michael Mulgrew, was located near West Bay Boulevard and Gunning River Road and taken into custody.
An investigation determined that Mulgrew was responsible for the killings, prosecutors said. He has remained in the Ocean County Jail since his arrest.
