The U.S. Coast Guard says the barges that washed up on Woodmont Beach in Milford on Thursday have drifted and remain stuck in West Haven as of Friday night.
They say the empty barges left the beach around 6:30 a.m. Friday and floated a mile away to Annawon Avenue.
Crews have attached tow lines onto these barges and will tow them to the original moor. This is about 5 miles from Milford, where they were beached.
However, officials say the weather is complicating efforts to remove them.
Around 10 a.m., the salvage operation was deemed unsafe due to tides and weather conditions. The salvage is planned for around 8 a.m. Saturday.
The barges belong to Buchanan Marine, which plans to re-moor them and assess whether they are still viable. Coast Guard marine inspectors are in Connecticut working with the company to have the barges salvaged and refloated.
The Coast Guard says no one was aboard the empty barges when they broke free. No injuries have been reported.
People are advised to stay away from the area until the barges are salvaged.
