“Battle To Survive a Broken Heart” by legendary artist Banksy, is coming out of a vault and into Manhattan’s Brookfield Place for all to see - before it heads out to auction.
The work was done on the side of a Brooklyn warehouse. The building’s owner had unknowingly invited Banksy to park his van inside, due to him parking in an unsafe area.
The next morning, the van and driver were gone, but the work depicting a heart-shaped balloon with Band-Aids was up.
However, no sooner had the work gone up that two vandals spray painted over the work, according to Guernsey’s auction president Arlan Ettinger.
However, Ettinger said rather than devaluing the work, the graffiti did the exact opposite, as Banksy went back to repaint the work, and make fun of the graffiti artists, writing “I remember my first tag,” among other sly remarks.
“This is the art this is how it evolved, the only time Banksy was known to do this, he snuck back, and added to it so its that combination, it’s more than concrete and bricks it’s a legendary story,” he said.
And while Ettinger and the family of the warehouse owner are not sure how much the artwork will bring in, they do know where half of the proceeds will go.
“The owner died young of a heart attack, and we approached the family about giving the funds to heart disease research, and they agreed completely, so half the dollars will go to the American Heart Association,” Ettinger said.
Those who want to see the work have until May 21, at which time the auction will be held right in Brookfield Place to see who will be taking home the legendary street art.
