Authorities: Port Chester man in custody following hours-long standoff with police
Authorities say a Port Chester man who barricaded himself inside his home is in custody after an hours-long standoff with police on Saturday.
Police say the 25-year-old who has a history of mental illness held officers at bay on Regent Street, barricaded himself inside his house for more than two hours and threatened suicide.
Officers say they have previously responded to several domestic disturbance calls at the home.
"When officers arrived, the family fled the house because the son had a knife and was planning to harm his family and threatened suicide," said Port Chester Police Captain Charles Nielsen.
Nielsen described the man as being "into jiu-jitsu" and that a large collection of knives was found inside the house.
The man surrendered to authorities and was taken to the hospital for mental evaluation.
Police were withholding the man's identity and investigators said there were no criminal charges pending as of Saturday night.
