Police arrested 5 people and seized multiple dirt bikes, mopeds and ATVs during a recent enforcement operation prompted by numerous complaints of riders creating hazardous conditions in the area.
The investigation and enforcement operation took place March 22 and was a joint effort by the Trenton Police Department, Hamilton Township Police Department and New Jersey State Police.
"The operation was focused and driven by a zero-tolerance approach to the illegal and careless operation of off-highway vehicles — specifically ATVs, dirt bikes and mopeds — on city and township streets," Hamilton police said in a statement. "Both departments have received dozens of complaints regarding riders recklessly traveling through the streets, creating hazardous conditions for vehicles, pedestrians and children playing."
Police focused their attention on areas of the two municipalities where surveillance showed the reckless behavior to be the most problematic. Police said at one point during the enforcement, a group of about 50 people riding dirt bikes, ATVs and mopeds surrounded officers who were investigating an ATV accident.
The group was later monitored riding through various streets in Hamilton as well as Cadwalader Park. When officers attempted to speak with them, the riders fled the area. During the operation, police arrested 5 people for disorderly conduct, obstruction, resisting arrest and eluding. Police also issued 70 summonses and seized a total of 19 vehicles that were unregistered, uninsured and being operated recklessly.
