An arrest has been made in the fatal shooting of a college student from Yorktown who was killed near her campus in Chicago.
Chicago police say Jose Medina-Medina was arrested Friday evening for allegedly shooting and killing 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman near her college campus.
The Department of Homeland Security is now involved, saying Medina entered the U.S. from Venezuela illegally.
They add that he was later released in 2023 after being arrested for shoplifting.
In a statement, the Gorman family says, “When systems fail, whether through release decisions, lack of coordination or unwillingness to act, the consequences are not abstract, they are real. And, in our case, they are permanent.”
Medina-Medina is also charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon.
