The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General has released police-worn body camera video from a police-involved shooting that left a man dead earlier this year.
The shooting happened on June 2. Officials say members of the Atlantic City Police Department and Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office SWAT teams were serving a search warrant at a home on the 100 block of North Florida Avenue.
They say that when officers arrived at the home, the front door was initially opened, but then closed by someone inside.
“Officers announced their presence and purpose at the door and then used a mechanical device to breach the door,” officials wrote in a statement.
The AG’s office says that when the officers breached the door, 52-year-old Donald Gardner opened fire at the officers. One officer was struck in the leg, while another was struck in the helmet.
Atlantic City Police Officer Robert Reynolds returned fire, striking Gardner multiple times, killing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A gun was recovered from inside the home.
