AG investigates death at Brooklyn men’s shelter following encounter with NYPD, Homeless Services officers
New York Attorney General Letitia James' Office of Special Investigation (OSI) says it launched an investigation into the death of a man who passed away last year after an encounter with the NYPD and Department of Homeless Services (DHS) officers.
The incident unfolded on Dec. 21, 2025, at a shelter on Clarkson Avenue.
According to James, the man allegedly pushed a DHS peace officer.
Investigators say DHS officers attempted to handcuff the man when a struggle ensued.
NYPD officers then responded to the location and tried to help restrain the man, who then lost consciousness.
The man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the AG's OSI, it had previously conducted a preliminary assessment of the incident.
New information about the man’s death prompted the OSI to launch a full investigation.
The man's identity and his cause of death were not immediately known.
