Residents in Gowanus Houses have been without gas for the past 16 days with no sign of when it will be restored.
Walesca Sanchez says she has gone without gas since Dec. 10.
"[NYCHA] put a paper on the door and no warning, no nothing. They just shut it off,” said Sanchez.
The sign on the door states, "The process to restore service in older buildings like ours is lengthy."
One resident, who didn't want to be identified, says NYCHA never told them when they would get their gas back.
"They haven't given a definite date. At first it was like January. Then they said February. They haven't come back yet,” the resident said.
In the meantime - while service is shut off - NYCHA handed out one hot plate and one slow cooker per household.
"Affects our way of life or my living. Like I have to order food or make one thing at a time,” said Sanchez.
She says she had to go out and buy another hot plate so she could cook for her family.
"One hot plate isn't going to do it,” said Sanchez.
Between the three buildings- 34 families have no gas in their apartment. Tenants tell News 12 this is a burden during the holidays where they planned to have family visit.
"We didn't cook for Christmas, none of us. And we're not going to be able to cook for New Year’s either,” said Sanchez.
Another sign outside the building says 'Chips'- a mobile pantry that is supposed to be a resource for outage-affected residents will be closed until Jan. 6.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA to ask about when gas will be restored and if residents can receive more hot plates. They did not provide a definite answer.
