If you’re planning to hit the road for Thanksgiving, AAA says get ready — this could be one of the busiest travel weeks ever. AAA projects 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between Tuesday, Nov. 25, and Monday, Dec. 1. That’s 1.6 million more travelers than last year — and a new all-time record. Nearly 73 million of them are expected to drive. Here in Brooklyn, drivers filling up at local gas stations are seeing prices around $3.15 a gallon for regular. That’s about eight cents more than this time last year, according to AAA. AAA says the worst times to drive will be Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, especially between late morning and early evening. The best advice: hit the road before lunch on those days if you can. Traffic is also expected to be heavy on MTA bridges and tunnels, especially Wednesday between 3 and 4 p.m. If you’re taking public transit instead, the MTA is adding extra subway and Long Island Rail Road trains on Thanksgiving morning to help people get to the Macy’s Parade. Metro-North will also run early getaway trains Wednesday afternoon. AAA also has one more reminder for drivers: check your battery and tires before heading out. Last Thanksgiving holiday period, AAA responded to hundreds of thousands of roadside calls for dead batteries, flat tires and empty tanks. For anyone leaving from Brooklyn, AAA says it may help to fill up tonight or early Tuesday to avoid long lines at the pump.
