Eight people were affected and six were hospitalized after a chemical incident at a North Brunswick shopping plaza Thursday morning.
North Brunswick Police Director Brian Hoiberg says the incident happened around 7:10 a.m. at the Brunswick Shopping Center on Milltown Road.
Officials say 53-year-old Jonathan Ball of Willingboro was driving a truck for Miracle Chemical Company of Farmingdale when the incident occurred.
Authorities say six people were transported to hospitals, including the truck driver, who was described as dazed.
Officials say none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
Investigators believe the incident may have involved a mixture of chemicals, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
Emergency crews detected a chlorine odor inside the building and evacuated the area.
“We did find a chlorine smell in the building, so we did evacuate. We sent some members in in their full protective gear to make sure that the building was totally evacuated and county hazmat was called,” said North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Department Chief Leo Whalen.
North Brunswick police, firefighters, EMS crews and the Middlesex County Hazmat Team responded to the scene.
Hazmat officials continue to investigate the incident.
