Dozens of people have been hospitalized with symptoms consistent with Salmonella on Long Island's East End. Stony Brook Southampton Hospital officials said the Emergency Department has seen a total of 58 patients since July 1. The majority have been evaluated, treated and discharged. Salmonella is an illness caused by bacteria on raw or undercooked foods. It's usually found on raw eggs, raw meat, seafood or poultry, fruits and vegetables, unpasteurized dairy or untreated water. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach pains, vomiting and headache. These symptoms usually last between a few hours and a few days. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services said it's involved in collecting information on the outbreak along the department's East End, but had no additional comments on where the outbreak is centered or what is causing it.

Both the New York State Health Department and the Town of Southampton declined to comment and referred our questions back to the county.
