A massive overnight fire at a bakery in Borough Park seriously injured a firefighter and sent three civilians, including a child, to the hospital, fire officials said.
The fire broke out at a matzah bakery at 1285 36th St., between Clara Street and 13th Avenue, while most of the neighborhood was asleep.
FDNY says it first received calls reporting the fire just before 2 a.m. Crews arrived within minutes and found heavy fire in the rear of the two-story building.
Firefighters moved hose lines inside the bakery to try to knock down the flames, but about 30 minutes into the operation, part of the back of the building collapsed.
That collapse trapped a firefighter inside. Fire officials say crews were able to quickly pull the firefighter out and get him medical help.
The firefighter suffered serious burns to his hands and possible breathing-related burns and was taken to a local hospital. Fire officials say he is now in stable condition.
FDNY also says three people from a nearby residential building were injured, including one child. One adult suffered a serious breathing injury. All three are listed as stable.
Video shared by neighbors shows thick smoke and heavy flames coming from the building, with firefighters working from the roof of a neighboring structure, spraying water down into the fire.
As the fire grew, FDNY had to call a third alarm just after 3 a.m., bringing in more help. At the height of the fire, more than 40 fire and EMS units and about 175 personnel were on scene.
Firefighters remained at the location for hours, working to put out hot spots and make sure the building was safe. Crews are expected to maintain a presence at the site through the day.
Fire officials say the fire appears to have started in the rear bakery area, where cooking takes place. Fire marshals are now investigating to determine the exact cause.
No bakery staff were inside the building at the time of the fire.
