The long-awaited revitalization of a Nassau County neighborhood’s main thoroughfare is finally underway.

Officials celebrated the beginning of construction on the stretch of Westbury Avenue in Carle Place at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday.

The 0.7‑mile beautification and reconstruction project, spanning from Jamaica Boulevard to Carle Road, is a partnership between North Hempstead Town and Nassau County.

The transformation of this key commercial corridor in the community includes roadway repaving, curb improvements, drainage upgrades, sidewalk replacements, and better pedestrian crossings.

“When we improve infrastructure, we’re really improving the quality of life for our residents. This will not only make the roadway wider and safer, but it’s also going to deliver an overall better experience for the people who use this downtown area every day,” said Town Supervisor, Jennifer DeSena.

The joint $3 million plan, which the town says has been in development for many years, is also being supported by more than $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds allocated to the town.

Portions of the sidewalk and roadway will temporarily close during construction, but access to homes and businesses will be maintained, according to officials.

“We’re removing some trees to accommodate construction, but the good news is we’ll be planting far more than we’re removing,” Kristin Seleski, Commissioner of Public Works noted.

“We’re also improving accessibility and even installing a decorative brick border along the new sidewalk,” Seleski continued.

The project is expected to be completed in 2027, weather permitting.
