Two lanes are currently closed on the Long Island Expressway westbound at Exit 49 due to a sinkhole.
The lane closure is expected to last at least 24 hours, police say.
The sinkhole is approximately 10 feet in diameter and 8 feet deep.
Suffolk County police say the sinkhole was reported to them around 1 p.m.
No details have been released on the cause of the hole, but police say one car is partially in the hole.
Drives should consider alternate routes, including Sunrise Highway and the Northern State Parkway.
No injuries have been reported.
A DOT spokesperson released the following statement:
NYSDOT highway crews are on the scene conducting emergency pavement repairs with the goal of having all lanes reopened as promptly and safely as possible. At this moment, the right and center lanes are closed, while the left and HOV lanes are open. Motorists should consider alternate routes.
