The SPCA Westchester recently rescued 23 sick cats and kittens from a hoarding situation in White Plains.
"These poor cats had absolutely nothing. There was no food, there was no water,” says Elizabeth Tavares, with the SPCA. "They actually were living in the walls and the ceilings."
The SPCA says this was a weekslong operation. The animals were found inside the apartment of someone who was evicted on South Lexington Avenue.
“We had to keep going back every day to get more and more and more until we got them all,” says Tavares.
News 12 was told one cat was even found inside the toilet.
"That one cat, we’re assuming, went in there just to see if there were any fluids in there. Unfortunately, there was nothing,” says Ernest Lungaro, director of the Humane Law Enforcement for the SPCA Westchester.
The SPCA says it's not the first time it has rescued a large number of cats from this home. News 12 reported last February that nearly 40 cats were found there.
“When the tenant, the owner of the cats, was relocated, we were able to set our traps again,” says Lungaro.
As for this rescue, the SPCA says two of the cats died. The others are receiving medical attention, but the SPCA says they hope the cats can be adopted once they fully recover.
“We're teaching them to play. We're teaching them to know that food is good because since they haven't eaten in weeks on end,” says Tavares.
If you'd like to help, the SPCA is looking for donations of food, linens and toys for the cats. You can find more information on their website.
